The GMAT or Graduate Management Admission Test is a standardized admission test that is used by more than 5000 business schools around the world. The purpose of the GMAT exam is to help business school admission offices compare students in the admission process. It is a standardized test designed to measure an aspirants’ aptitude for business studies at graduate school.
The GMAT does not test business knowledge but analytical, writing, quantitative, verbal and reading skills. In plain words, it tests your math, logic, and partly English language knowledge.
The exam has been administered for more than 50 years in 150 countries and is being conducted by Pearson VUE headquartered at Minneapolis.
GMAT is a Computer based Adaptive test. The cost of the test is INR 20600.00 approximately. The exam is conducted throughout the year and the scores are valid for 5 years.
GMAT® is a Computer Adaptive Test which indicates that the test adapts itself to the correctness / incorrectness of your responses. There is an Integrated Reasoning Section which is not adaptive. The first few questions in Verbal Ability and Quantitative sections are of moderate difficulty. With correct responses, the level of difficulty increases, and conversely - with incorrect responses the level of difficulty decreases. The score does not depend only on the number of correct and incorrect answers. It also depends on the difficulty level of the questions encountered.
The first section of the GMAT is the Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA) which consists of two essays, timed at half hour each. The candidate will be required to write two sorts of essays: Analysis of an Argument as well as Analysis of an Issue.
The second section of the GMAT tests your math abilities, where you will have 75 minutes to answer 37 multiple choice questions (MCQ’s). The candidate will see two sorts of math problems on the GMAT.
1. Analysis of an Arguement
2. Analysis of an Issue
MCQ’s of Math that the candidate is already well aware with Data Sufficiency.
Special sort of math problems, where the candidate has two hints and he is asked whether he has enough data to answer a given question.
The candidate will have 75 minutes to answer 41 questions. There are three sorts of questions that are tested on the GMAT verbal section.
Grammar questions where you will be asked whether the emphasized portion of a sentence is accurate, and if not to choose the best answer.
The questions that are asking to candidates to evaluate the structure of an argument.
Questions tests your understanding of a passage.

Quantitative Scaled Score (on a scale from 6 to 51) and an equivalent percentile
Total Scaled Score (on a scale from 200 to 800) and an equivalent percentile
The total score depends only on the Verbal and Quantitative scores. The AWA score and the Integrated Reasoning scores are independent and have no impact on the total scaled score.
Total number of questions answered
The number of questions answered correctly
Level of difficulty of the questions correctly answered
Although the Verbal and Quantitative sections are both scored on the same scale (from 6 to 51), the percentile associated with an individual score in the verbal section may be different from the percentile associated with the same score in the Quantitative section. For example, a Verbal scaled score of 46 places a student in the 99th percentile for that section. A Quantitative scaled score of 46, however, only places the student in the 57th percentile for that section. Most of the schools look at only the overall score. A few may have a minimum for each segment.
Each essay is given two independent ratings. One by an independent evaluator who will evaluate the ideas of the student and the other by a computer programme referred to as an E-Rater which will also evaluate the language, structure, spellings, punctuation and grammatical errors. The response for each rating ranges from 0 – 6. If the two ratings differ by more than one point the rating of the second human rater is accepted. The final score is the average of the two ratings received for both the essays.
